INDICATION:

  • Sofosbuvir is a prescription medicine used with other antiviral medicines to treat chronic (long-term) Hepatitis C infection in adults.
  • Sofosbuvir should not be used alone. Sofosbuvir should be used with ribavirin or in combination with peginterferon alfa-2a to treat chronic Hepatitis C infection.

The effectiveness of sofosbuvir has been studied in patients with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes 1, 2 or 3, including those co-infected with HIV-1 and HCV. The type and duration of treatment depends on the genotype of the virus and the patient population. Response to treatment depends on host and viral factors.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

When sofosbuvir is used in combination with ribavirin or peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin, the contraindications applicable to these medicinal products also apply to the combination treatment.

Contraindications for ribavirin and peginterferon alfa-2a are listed in the package leaflet of these medicines.

Treatment with sofosbuvir in combination with ribavirin or peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin is contraindicated in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and in men who intend to impregnate their partner. Treatment with sofosbuvir in combination with ribavirin or peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin may cause serious problems for the fetus, and the risk to the fetus is greater than any potential benefit to the patient.
